Tashi Delek! Our story begins with a legend — in 1680, Merak Lama's horse refused to move from this very hill, and the famous Tawang Monastery was built on that spot. A few centuries later, our family opened Hotel Taktsang a short walk away. We'd love to be your home in the Himalayas.
Tawang sits at the far eastern edge of India, where the mountains touch the sky and the road gently ends. From most of our sixty-two rooms you'll see a panoramic view of the mountains and the painted walls of the monastery closer by. It's a view our guests photograph with their morning chai.
We're a small family-run hotel, not a chain. That means the same faces at reception each day, food cooked the way our mothers taught us, and real time to answer your questions — whether it's about permits, weather, or where to find the best momos in town.

Made for small families and groups of friends. Roomy enough for three, with a King-size bed and space for an extra mattress on request. Windows frame the valley and the rooftops of old Tawang.
Stand at 15,200 ft on the McMahon Line, where Indian soldiers held their ground in 1962. We arrange the special permit, a sturdy SUV, a warm driver-guide and hot flasks. You bring a jacket and a camera.
Sit quietly with the monks as they chant the sun up. Breakfast on return.
Prayer flags at 13,700 ft, a holy lake, and photo stops your driver knows by heart.

Our restaurant on the ground floor is open from 7 in the morning till 10 at night. We serve Monpa and Tibetan favourites alongside a proper Indian menu, with plenty of vegetarian options. Come down in your slippers — we don’t mind.
Daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata arrive at Guwahati airport. Our partner taxis can pick you up from there.
We arrange your Inner Line Permit in advance. A night at Bhalukpong or Bomdila breaks up the drive and helps with altitude.
India’s new 12-km all-weather tunnel (opened March 2024) makes the Dirang-to-Tawang stretch comfortable year round.
